What the Wisdom Tree Means to Me...

(Images by Pankuj Parashar, Direction 1979)

Soudhamini, Direction 1985

It means chai, silence, laughter, waiting, watching , darkness, bright eyes, early morning, someone closing my eyes from behind, someone else warning me just in time, sounds from the main theatre, class in CRT, more chai, the ledge on the side, the rough surface on my palms, saree, yellow flowers, whistling, cinematix, a script, camera practicals, Kakaji, NVK Murthy’s ambassador (his daughter’s badminton racquet), folded knees, chin within and endless rocking. Don’t care much how it got its name. I like it. That’s enuf.

Susant ‘Lulu’ Mishra, Direction 1989

Lot of wisdom
Lot of introspection
Lot of fights
Lot of renewed energy
Lot of contemplation
Lot of dreams
Everything put into one that was the Wisdom Tree

Naseeruddin Shah, Acting 1975

That tree has a lot of vibes around it because so many unhappy souls have sat there and felt better!

Shabana Azmi, Acting 1973

It was wonderful. The Wisdom Tree epitomizes all the joy I received at the Institute.

Kundan Shah, Direction 1976

Addabaazi…basically addabaazi! Faaltoo talk…and faltoo is very important. The Wisdom Tree sums up the spirit of the place.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Editing 1987

Well there is a ghost up in the tree. No, no I am not joking, there really is a ghost up there on the Wisdom Tree. If you sit under the tree, the ghost will come down and make you see things. I saw my Devdas sitting under the tree. Other than that, I did not sit under the tree much. I always found it very crowded. I did not interact much with people. I’d prefer to be in the jungle instead, especially around morning and watch the leaves as the early morning light struck them.

Indira Agarwal, Screenplay Writing 1971

La Wisdom Tree

The sniffles, the sobs,
The giggles, the laughs,
The mashes, the smashes,
Of students and profs:
“O my dear, hasn’t she eloped?”
“No you fat-head, she’s merely doped.”

“And what about the Prof?”
“What happened to him?”
“Don’t you know, the movies took him!”
Oh, la, la! And ah, la, lo!
This is merely some of the dose,
For dear readers,
Where gossip runs free,
Is where we have
La “Wisdom” Tree

These ‘musings’ have been taken from the ‘wisTreefest Bulletins’ that were published daily during the Wisdom Tree Film Festival, Pune 2003.
